by National Artist for Literature Virgilio Almario

Libretto by Liza Magtoto
Music by Jed Balsamo
Directed by Tess Jamias

A children’s musical based on a folk tale as retold by Rio Alma. This folk tale uses chaos among animals in Mount Arayat to point out that whatever one does affect others. In the end the court of Mariang Sinukuan teaches us a lesson about justice and accountability. To be performed by only four actors who sing, move, dance and give life to a variety of animal characters, the play promises to be fun, exciting and educational.

About the Show:

To end its 24th season, Philippine Ballet Theatre (PBT), the country's pre-eminent classical ballet company and a resident company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, is proud to present CARMINA BURANA AND OTHER BALLETS, in collaboration with the UST Symphony Orchestra and Coro Tomasino on evening shows.

Delight in a fresh re-staging of Marius Petipa's Paquita Grand pas classique, a major cornerstone in classical ballet repertoire from the late 19th century, now continually re-staged and performed by ballet companies around the world.

PBT artistic director Ronilo Jaynario also brings back to the stage his colorful neoclassical ballet 'Beatles Revived', a contemporary romance of sorts and a treat, not only for fans of The Beatles, but for dance and music lovers alike.

Finally, PBT invites audiences to revel once more in Barcelona-based choreographer David Campos Canteros' dark and brilliant 'Carmina Burana', an intriguing theatrical satire of Church and State as well as a powerful fusion of daring modern ballet and Carl Orff's celebrated scenic cantata.

Synopsis:

Louisa May Alcott`s 1869 semi-autobiographical classic novel gets a musical make over, with its themes of sisterhood and female empowerment providing an automatic connect for women of all ages. An inspiring story of the March sisters - Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy - growing up during the American Civil War. A story that touches the hearts and minds of young and old alike.

Little Women focuses on the four March sisters - feisty, tomboyish, aspiring author Jo, who maintains fierce loyalty and love for her family while refusing the constricting role laid out for women at that time, romantic Meg, pretentious Amy, and kind-hearted Beth - and their beloved Marmee, at home in Concord, Massachusetts while the family patriarch is away serving as a Union Army chaplain during the Civil War. Intercut with the vignettes in which their lives unfold are several recreations of the melodramatic short stories Jo writes in her attic studio.

Synopsis:

"Magsimula Ka!" is the story of young dreamers whose ambitions fade in reality`s cruel glare.

Miguel is a young composer forced by his father to forego his music and bury his talent in the world of business.

Monina wants to help the less-privileged, but is frustrated by the many problems that beset earnest social workers like her.

Mario is a talented scriptwriter who settles for writing a "sex advice" column in a cheap tabloid.

Mandy has a beautiful singing voice but has to sing in a cheap beer garden because nobody will give him a helping hand.

These four young people belong to graduating class that is filled with so much hope but ends up capitulating to the uninspired demands of the workaday world.

Is there a way out for young people like them? "Magsimula Ka!" says there is. The thing is to start, to act to uphold one`s talent or ambition, despite all odds. The first step is the crucial one. Once you take it, everything else can follow.

The point is not lost on a disabled girl whom the four young people befriend and teach how to overcome her physical and psychological affliction.

It is not lost on the hostesses in the beer garden where Mandy sings. They learn to take pride in themselves and even lead the young graduates in a thanksgiving visit to the church in Baclaran.

It is not lost on Miguel`s mother, who finds fulfillment in her son`s eventual success.

It is not lost on Miguel`s mother, who comes to terms with his son`s ambition after a painful period of emotional strife.

It is not lost on Millie, Miguel`s younger sister, who play`s a crucial role in Miguel`s reconciliation with his father.

It is not lost on a nun who works with Monina at the rehabilitation centre.

It is not lost on the household help, Monang and Jograd, who dream of becoming showbiz stars like Miguel and his friends - and achieve that dreams despite of all odds.

Miguel, Mandy and Mario get their own start when they decide to enter a national pop song competition, the Philippop. They make it to the finals and the real suspense begins, because their entry is pitted against equally worthy songs.

The Philippop proves to be the climax of the play, as it weaves the different characters` various dreams together in a triumphant musical tapestry. Miguel and Monina acknowledge their love for each other and romance too has its start. The climatic song is the popular "Magsimula Ka!" a fitting theme for the musical and its cast of searchers.
