Sayaw, Sabel at the CCP and the Provinces

Sayaw, Sabel, a dance production choreographed by Agnes Locsin based on the iconic work of National Artist for Visual Arts Ben Cabrera, will be presented at the CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater) on August 11, 2010 at 7:30 p.m.

The performance is a preview of the regional tour of Sayaw, Sabel which is being facilitated by the CCP Outreach and Exchange Division under its Tugon Pansining Program. The tour is slated on September 24 to October 10, 2010 in Cavite, Bulacan, Pampanga, Pangasinan, Ilocos, La Union and Baguio.

Sayaw, Sabel is a collection of dances depicting how the Filipino goes through life as a Filipino. Symbolized by Philippine National Artist Benjamin (BenCab) Cabrera’s Sabel, the Filipino treads through challenges, trials and tribulations in the best way he could, sometimes successfully and sometimes dismally. Survival, in any form, is our way of life. Sabel is a warning for what awaits the unsuccessful.

Who is Sabel? Sabel is the name which BenCab christened the scavenging figure that dominated his works in the 60’s and 70’s.

In Sayaw, Sabel, Locsin explores the Filipino psyche. Locsin, winner of the Prince Takamado Award and the Silver Medal at the 2nd Tokyo International Choreography Competition in 1994, is the director and choreographer of the show. Her 2008 restaging of "La Revolucion Filipina" for Ballet Philippines received the Philstage Gawad Buhay for most outstanding dance production of 2008.

Sayaw, Sabel will have seven solos on how the Filipino survives the trials, mishaps and the lighter side of a stressed life. “For Bencab, Sabel is a melancholic symbol of dislocation, despair and isolation, the personification of human dignity threatened by life`s vicissitudes, and the vast inequities of Philippine society," said Locsin.

“In this production, Sabel is a reinvention of Jose Rizal`s Sisa, whose sad and relentless plight has come to represent an image of the country`s continuous and seemingly endless struggle to survive. Sabel dances, speaks and sings to express what could have been her past life,” she said.

Music is by Louie Ocampo and Joey Ayala, who share their unpublished works for this production. Additional sound design and music is by Jakob Rodriguez to the selected OPM songs of Celeste Legazpi, Basil Valdez, Parokya ni Edgar, Noel Cabangon, and Aegis. National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera`s poetry will also be used.

Each show will feature some of the country’s well accomplished and highly regarded dance artists today and one special guest artist portraying the title role; thus making each performance an experience unlike the other.

Guest theater artists who will portray the title role are Maribel Legarda, Melvin Lee, Shamaine Centenera Buencamino, and Nonie Buencamino. The dance artists to be featured in the show are: Christine Crame, Annette Cruz-Mariano, Judell de Guzman-Sicam, Annie Divinagracia-Sartorio, Grethel Domingo-Raypon, Gaye Galiluyo, Sonny Locsin, Alden Lugnasin, Camille Ordinario-Joson, Dwight Rodrigazo, Georgette Sanchez, and Perry Sevidal.
