Two World Choral Champions In Concert At The CCP

Two-time Choir of the World champion 1995 & 2010, the University of Santo Tomas Singers and two-time European Grand Prix for Choral Singing champion 2002 & 2008 the Akademski Pevski Zbor (APZ) Tone Tomšič come together in an evening of choral grandeur in the concert Dos Bravissimos. This much-awaited concert will be held on July 25, 2011, Monday, 8PM at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (Main Theater) of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. The concert is presented by the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the University of Santo Tomas Singers.

The UST Singers, the premier mixed ensemble of the Royal and Pontifical University of Santo Tomas, was founded by its conductor Prof. Fidel Gener Calalang, Jr., head of the Conducting Department at UST Conservatory of Music. In its nineteen years of existence, the group has completed twenty international tours where they have garnered an impressive plethora of awards and recognitions in twenty seven international choral festivals and earned more than sixty five top prizes in twenty choral contests of international acclaim.

In their recent competition tour of 2010, the Singers bagged sixteen first prizes at the 16th Bangor International Choral Competition, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom; 56th Cork International Choral Festival, Ireland; 6th Mundus Cantat International Choral Festival, Poland; 63rd Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, Wales, United Kingdom, 28th Festival Internacional de Musica de Cantonigros, Spain and the 56th Certamen Internacional de Habaneras y Polifonia, Torrevieja, Spain.

The Akademski Pevski Zbor (Academic Mixed Choir) Tone Tomšič hails from Slovenia and is composed of students from the different colleges of the University of Ljubljana. Under the baton of Prof. Sebastian Vrhovnik, the APZ Tone Tomsic has earned its reputation as the world’s most awarded choir. Winner of the prestigious European Grand Prix for Choral Singing twice in 2002 (Arezzo) and 2008 (Debrecen), this ensemble has reaped the highest awards in these renowned international competitions: First Prize, 1996 Koorwedstrijd Vlaanederen Cantatat Maasmeschelen; 1980, 1984 & 1999 winner of the Grand Prix de la Ville de Tours; 1980 & 2001 winner of the Grand Premio Citta di Gorizia “C.A. Seghizzi”; First Prize, 2003 Tampere International Choral Festival; 2 First Prizes, 2004 Festival Internacional de Musica de Cantonigros; Grand Prix winner, 2002 & 2006 Maribor Choir Competition; Grand Prix winner, 2001 & 2007 Varna Choir Competition; Grand Prix Rimini 2010; and recenty, winner of the Grand Prize and the Fleischmann International Trophy, Cork International Choir Festival 2011, among others.

For their many local and international accomplishments, the APZ Tone Tomšič received the highest state medal of distinction, the Zlati Znak Republike Slovenije (Golden Prize of the Republic of Slovenia), in 1996 and The Golden Award JSKD for outstanding achievements in music in 2000.

Since its inception in 1926, originally as an all male group – the France Marolt Male Ensemble, the choir has been considered as a catalyst in Slovenian choral music for exhibiting technical musical proficiency and for their unique programming which consists of compositions from all historical periods (with particular attention to contemporary choral music).

This CCP gala concert will mark the group’s debut performance in the Philippines. The event will be part of the first leg of their 2011 Asian tour, which will bring them to Taipei and Beijing as well.

About the Show:

The Woman: A Story of Love, Loss, and Style

Do you remember……

Twirling in rainbow skirts during childhood birthday parties?

Feeling embarrassed buying your very first bra?

Buying a pair of killer red heels to get over your ex?

Walking down the aisle in Mom's wedding gown to be with the person you will forever cherish?

Each milestone in a woman's life is filled with laughter, tears, and memorable fashion choices. Behind each halter top, faded pair of jeans, cocktail dress, painful set of stilettos, and designer handbag, she has a story to tell.

The sensational Off-Broadway show, Love, Loss, and What I Wore, written by sisters Nora Ephron (When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle) and Delia Ephron (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Hanging Up), vividly recounts a selection of comic and heartwarming stories from various women who remember key moments in their lives through the clothes they wore. The show is based on the bestselling book by Ilene Beckerman, and has featured notable actresses such as Jane Lynch (Glee), Rosie O'Donnell, Brooke Shields (Blue Lagoon, Grease), Betty White (Golden Girls), Rita Wilson, Nikki Blonsky (Hairspray), Fran Drescher (The Nanny), Jamie Lynn Siegler (The Sopranos and Entourage), Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls), Alicia Silverstone (Clueless), America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), Kathy Najimy (Sister Act movie series), Kristin Chenoweth (Wicked), to name just a few.

Since its debut in 2009 at New York's Westside Theater, Love, Loss and What I Wore has never failed to garner praise from critics and delight audience members who saw themselves or someone they knew in each funny and poignant tale. The show won the 2010 Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience as well as the 2010 Broadway.com Audience Award for Favorite New Off-Broadway Play. It has since then been staged in Los Angeles, Toronto, Brazil, Germany, Australia, and Paris.

Now, it's the Filipina's turn to be charmed and moved by these tales of life and fashion as CTE Productions brings the acclaimed off-Broadway hit to Manila with some of the best female artists in the scene today.

The Asian premiere cast of Love, Loss, and What I Wore includes theater luminary and current Associate Artistic Director of Repertory Philippines, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, veteran theater actress, writer, and emerging director Cathy Azanza-Dy, TV host, model, performer, and creative visionary Teresa Herrera, thespian and music industry sensation Bituin Escalante, and acclaimed classical vocalist, theater performer, and executive director for Music Artes Philippines, Jay Valencia-Glorioso. The show is directed by the same tandem behind the hit show Defending The Caveman, Michael Williams and Cathy Azanza-Dy. Set design is by recent Gawad Buhay awardee Denis Lagdameo, and lighting will be engineered by sought-after lighting designer John Batalla.

About the Show:

Philippine Ballet Theater opens its 25th season with the much loved Shakespearean classic "Romeo and Juliet set into ballet by choreographer Tom Pazik, one of the leading choreographers of the American Ballet Theater who created this ballet for world acclaimed prima ballerina, Maniya Barredo. Ms. Barredo stages this romantic ballet for PBT.

Founded in 1987, Philippine Ballet Theatre (PBT) has established itself as the pre-eminent classical ballet company in the Philippines today. It was borne out of an alliance of leading dance groups in the eighties but immediately won recognition as a resident ballet company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Philippine Ballet Theatre has now expanded its vision and pursues the goal of bringing the upscale art of dance to general appreciation among Filipino audiences. With its concurrent preservation of the rich and elegant classical story ballets, such as Swan Lake, Giselle, Nutcracker, and Raymonda, PBT also launches contemporary ballets that are of emotional depth, dramatic realism and stark inventiveness like the critically acclaimed Carmina Burana and Daughters of Mourning (Bernarda Alba). Its repertoire continues to dazzle and amaze various audiences with its distinct and poetic delicacy and refined sophistication.

The company has traveled in national and international tours presenting the best of its Filipino and Western repertoire; highlighting the company's commitment to artistic excellence in the classical, neo-classical and pop-classical traditions.
