August 7, 2010 (Saturday) - "Tiovivo c. 1950"

This film is a Goya award winner, directed by José Luis Garci, which offers a nostalgic vision of several people in Madrid all managing to survive in the face of post-war era...

"Tiovivo" has virtually no plot, and limits itself to representing the lives of a bunch of people in the Madrid of the post-war era. Garci's "Tiovivo c. 1950" could be considered as a deserving heir to Camus' "La Comena", based on Camilo José Cela's marvelous novel, which is a sad composition with the stories of many people in the Madrid of 1950. It depicts how life was by war survivors.

August 14, 2010 (Saturday) - "Love Can Seriously Damage Your Health"

Manuel Gómez Pereira’s Spanish romantic-comedy flick El amor perjudica seriamente la salud (Love Can Seriously Damage Your Health) narrates a long-time on-again-off again love affair between two characters (played by Pénelope Cruz and Gabino Diego) when the Beatles arrived in Madrid in 1965...

Two young people meet in the 60's as a result of their devotion to John Lennon, and have a recurring relationship during the next thirty years at the oddest of moments, in the most diverse places and during very important moments that defined several decades. Pay attention as one couple of younger actors alternate with the other couple of older actors to recreate this 30-year span in this Spanish-French comedy.

August 21, 2010 (Saturday) - "Dark Habits"

Yolanda is a Nightclub singer who, after seeing her boyfriend die of an overdose and fearing the police, seeks refuge in a convent that saves women from the streets. These off-beat gay nuns on dope include a heroin using abbess who loves Yolanda; Sor Rata de Callejón who writes romance novels under a pseudonym; Sor Perdida who is obsessed with housekeeping and raising a tiger in the convent yard; and Sor Estiércol who designs fabulous fashions and is in love with the local priest. They plan an evening extravaganza starring Yolanda to celebrate the abbess's birthday in order to convince their wealthy patron not to abandon them.

August 28, 2010 (Saturday) - "Open Your Eyes"

If you are in a mood for a psychological thriller, then Alejandro Amenábar’s Abre los ojos (Open Your Eyes) is the film for you. This film depicts the story of a former womanizer (Eduardo Noriega), disfigured in a car crash, and has trouble distinguishing dreams from reality. American Director Cameron Crowe remade this film as Vanilla Sky in 2001, with Tom Cruise in the lead role and Penélope Cruz reprising her role as Sofia...

César, an orphan who inherited a huge fortune from his parents, used to live in a luxurious house of his own where he hosts lavish parties. He is very handsome and a renowned womanizer. He met Sofía and began to feel something he had never felt before: love. Nuria, with whom César had his last affair, was very jealous; she went to pick him up in her car the next morning and committed suicide by crashing into a wall. César survived the crash, but his face was hideously disfigured, his handsome looks gone and needs to have his face rebuilt by surgery. But the Doctors said they couldn't help him. César found out that the real nightmare had only just began for him.

August 29, 2010 (Sunday) - "Wine Cellars"

La bodega (1929), directed by Benito Perojo and based on the novel of Vicente Blanco Ibanéz (1905), has for a plot the Andalusian wineries where there was an atmosphere of feudalism and clerical exploitation, coupled with a correlative misery and civil unrest. Also, during those times, the masters sexually harass their workers. The film recounts the love affair of Rafael and María Luz, the daughter of Fermín who works at the wine cellars of Pablo Dupont in Jerez. When Rafael gets wounded in a smuggling operation, he was taken care of by María Luz. Now, Luis Dupont is known in Jerez for his scandalous festivities in which he is joined by her cousin Lola, called “the marchioness”. In one of these feasts, one farm employee is killed by a bull because of their jokes. With his licentious behaviour, Luis courts María Luz whom he knows since childhood before Rafael’s eyes, while the marchioness harasses Rafael continuously. One harvest time, María Luz gets drunk and gives herself up to Luis. Ashamed of what happened, she abandons Rafael without giving explanations.
