EQUUS
Synopsis

For its midyear offering, Repertory Philippines comes up with another "first": Peter Shaffer's EQUUS. Multi-awarded - Tony Award for Best Play, New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play, this riveting piece of theatre is at once relevant and mesmerizing in its storyline and theme. Psychiatrist Martin Dysart meets his most challenging case in a young boy of seventeen who has been charged with the crime of blinding six horses by gouging out their eyes. As the play unravels, one realizes that beneath the surface of the crime lies another dimension of the human psyche more terrifying than what it seems to be.

Equus stars a powerhouse cast: Miguel Faustmann, Jaime del Mundo, Dido dela Paz, Roselyn Perez, Tami Monsod - to name a few. Red Concepcion and newcomer Marco Manalac alternate as the young man Alan. At the helm as director is multi-awarded actor Audie Gemora.

Bonus for those who read this article this far... Daniel Radcliffe (a.k.a Harry Potter) also performed in this play. Check out his pics... the little wizard boy we grew to love from the Sorcerer's Stone has become a man...how time flies or is it magic? =)

  1. My boyfriend sitting beside me was quite anxious because he has not seen so many gays gathered in just one place, right until now... He even remarked that if someone planted a bomb on Greenbelt Onstage that night, it would cause a dent among the gay population =)

I love the acting of Miguel Faustmann, Roselyn Perez and newbie Marco Manalac. Ang galing! I attended Repertory Philippines' workshop before and acted in some plays, so I can just imagine it was most probably uncomfortable practicing the nude scenes, especially for Pheona Baranda.

After the play, I felt disturbed. Even if the play was good and the acting superb, no one stood up to give a standing ovation. Probably the audience felt the same way I felt... disturbed.

P.S. I just learned this was not the first time Equus was staged in the Philippines. It was first performed in the 1970s and Leo Martinez was Alan Strang! Can you believe it? I wish I was able to watch his version =)
