Der Kaufmann (Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice") at the CCP from September 27 - October 13, 2013

Hey guys! Here is an interesting take on William Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice." It's set during the Holocaust, the time when Nazis were terrorizing Abraham's children, plus Antonio is portrayed as a homosexual. The first few minutes of the play, already brought tears to my eyes.  All the actors are superb! My personal favorites are Portia (Regina de Vera how can you memorize all those complicated lines? Bilib!), Antonio (Marco Viana I feel your pain) and Shylock's youngest daughter (you have a bright future in theater dear Trixie Esteban =) I just wish the dialogues used easy to understand Filipino words. Nosebleed ako!

I watched "Der Kaufmann" on opening night, thanks to Lorelei Celestino, marketing and sales associate of Tanghalang Pilipino =) Terno pa kami ng suot, mukhang sasayaw hehe =) (Translation: Our clothes match in color, looks like we're going to perform a dance number =)

The Merchant of Venice
Ang Negosyante ng Venecia

Tanghalang Huseng Batute (CCP Studio Theater)
September 27 - October 13, 2013

About the Show: (Source: TicketWorld)

Directed by Rody Vera and Tuxqs Rutaquio

Written by renowned English poet and playwright William Shakespeare, the Merchant of Venice is often considered as a romantic comedy in Shakespeare’s compilation of plays known as the “First Folio,” but has been more regarded for its dramatic take on religion and mercy.

The play is about a bitter and detested Jewish moneylender who seeks revenge against a Christian merchant who has defaulted on a loan. TP’s version will be a departure from the usual interpretation. A play within a play, it will be set at the time of the Holocaust, with Nazis directing the Jewish “actors” and will underscore the dehumanizing effect of racism and intolerance. In this adaption, the viewers will choose between love for a friend and love for money.

This innovative take on Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice, as translated by National Artist Rolando Tinio, will showcase Rody Vera’s adaptation and direction and TJ Ramos’ sound design.

Beware!!!

Comment: When my family and I went to Australia for vacation way back in 2009, this was being staged at the Sydney Opera House. I felt bad I missed it since I only found out about it the day after the event. Good thing Madame Butterfly is now here in Manila. Finally! My chance to watch and with my friends pa =)

Rating: 4/5

Review: If you are going to watch one opera in your lifetime, let it be "Madame Butterfly." So heart-wrenching that I couldn't stop crying at the end of the show. I'm also delighted that a translation was posted for every Italian line sung so people watching could understand. The Japanese and Mexican leads were amazing as well as the Filipino supporting cast. Bravo! Bravo! We gave you all a standing ovation that night =)

About the Show:

This production is in cooperation with the Cultural Center of the Philippines in honor of Ms. Fides Cuyugan-Asensio, who penned the libretto and lyrics of the Song of Joseph, for her dedication to music theater for 60 years.

“Song of Joseph”, the Musical, is a music-theater masterpiece born out of love and devotion for the man who “took care of the interests” of Mary and Jesus. It is the life, the love and the glorious death of St. Joseph put into beautiful libretto and lyrics of Fides Asensio inspired from the bible and other little facts known about Saint Joseph. The music of the libretto was a team work of husband and wife Jeannelle and Raymond Roldan as their debut in music composition. It depicts the enduring love of Joseph for Mary, its joys and sorrows and the reward of a glorious death for having lived faithfully his divine call to be Mary’s and Jesus’ protector.

It is the first original Filipino full length musical on Saint Joseph, produced by Fr. Rony Alkonga, OSJ (Oblates of St. Joseph) in collaboration with Music Theater Foundation Philippines for the 100th year anniversary of the Oblates of Joseph in the Philippines. The music arrangements were created in collaboration with Jun Latonio, Paulo Zarate, Gino Cruz, Jungee Marcelo, and Alvin Nunez.

Family life, love and unity are the themes of The ‘Song of Joseph’ making it appropriate for the Christmas Season.

About the Show:

THE music of renowned 19th century Filipino composer Marcelo Adonay (1848-1928) will be brought to life by the Philippine Madrigal Singers led by Mark Carpio, with bass soloist, Greg de Leon, pianist Nita Abrogar-Quinto, violinist Chona Noble, the UP Cherubim and Seraphim, conducted by Elena R. Mirano, and the UP Orchestra under the baton of Prof. Edna Martinez in a concert entitled Adonay, the Maestro from Pakil on November 30, 2011, Wednesday, 3 PM, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Little Theater. An informal talk on the maestro and his milieu at 1:30 PM at the CCP Dream Theater will precede the concert.

Repertoire will include La Marieta, La Julita for solo piano; Pequeña Balse, Meditacion Lugubre for violin and piano; Salve Regina, Libera Me Domine, Gozos a la Santisima Virgen (a Nuestra Señora de la Consolacion), Villancico a Belen Pastores, and two movements (Kyrie and Gloria) from his greatest sacred work, the Pequeña Misa Solemne (1903), which Adonay based on a fragment of Gregorian chant taken from a Flemish mass dated 1669.

Marcelo Adonay (1848-1928) hailed from Pakil, Laguna, and entered San Agustin Church as a tiple (boy soprano), as was the custom then in Spanish colonial times. His musical genius unfolded at the convent, a combination of self-taught and friar-honed skills, as he soon became adept at playing the organ, piano, violin, contrabass, flute and trumpet, composing liturgical as well as secular pieces. He eventually became the first Filipino maestro de capilla (chapel master) of the San Agustin music establishment, a much in-demand orchestra conductor and music teacher. Together with other Filipino musicians of his time such as Jose Canseco, Francisco Roxas, Bibiano Morales, Rosalio Silos and Manuel Mata, he lived and worked in what has been called “The Golden Age of Filipino Music” — 1880-1890. He was also instrumental in founding two important music societies -- the Union Artistica Musical in 1885, and the Sociedad de Santa Cecilia in 1888, organizations which aimed to promote and uplift Filipino music, and protect the interests of Filipino musicians.

Come and be part of a rare musical journey back to the glorious days of the Maestro’s era, when San Agustin Church reverberated magnificently with Adonay’s music.
